Peer review: Sterea Ellada (GR)

Peer review Sterea Ellada

Sterea Ellada hosted the peer review from 13-16th September 2010

Between the 13th-16th September it was Sterea Ellada’s (Greece) turn to host a Peer Review  to audit its tourism potential and its strategy for sustainable tourism .

Six experts from the PRESERVE project from regions such as Alba, Avila, Jönköping as well as from the AER were present to investigate the regions potentials, weaknesses as well as the strategies successfully applied.

Sterea Ellada is rich on natural resources such as hot springs, mountains, seas but it also has numerous historical sites. The goal is to market this potential on an international platform.

Having interviewed 12 stakeholders involved in tourism development in the region from both the public and private sector, there were common findings on the region. It was overall agreed that there is a great lack of public awareness of the available resources especially water resources and with it the therapy spa centres. A clear strategy plan will have to be developed to unlock the regions potential.

The group dedicated most of its time to visit local public centre of therapeutic baths, as well as thermal therapy centres for tourists in order to capture the reality on the ground.
