Peer review Avila

Avila City Wall

Avila Province hosted the peer review from 31 May - 3 June 2010.

From 31st May to 3rd June Avila held the peer review meeting of the Preserve European Project, to the meeting have came partners from Jönköping in Sweden, Sterea Ellada in Greece, Alba in Romania and the Assembly of European Regions, all of them as peers, and of course Avila from Spain as host.

We saw them our province, and our main resource, the tourisim and how we try to develop it in a sustainable way based in the preservation of three main points: cultural, natural and gastronomy heritage, in order to exchange experiences with our partners to learn from them and to learn each other form the field visits.

We covered the most representative parts of the province, the capital, a Human Heritage City, with the walls and medieval palaces, as well as some exhibitions aimed to discover the celtic culture of our area called “Vetones”, the flat area in the north, La Moraña, visiting some Mudejar style churches in Arevalo. On the other hand we visited a Castro called “Las Cogotas” a litlle celtic village restored. Related to natural landscape we visited Gredos Regional Park as well as a good practice sample like the Tree Adventure Park, and we showed to our partners something so simple but at the same time important, the agrofood products as the base of our gastronomy heritage, for instance the beans of “El Barco de Avila”, and last but not least we discovered just one of the more than 800 rural houses in our province with a real mill restored in “Tormellas”.

As a complementary an open activities we organized a press conference as well as a workshop at the Tourism University: Sustainable Tourism in Europe.

All the week our guest tasted different products of our wide gastronomy due to the fact that this is an important part for our tourism and to preserve our traditions.
